On a rainy night in upstate New York, a stranger arrives at a hilltop mansion. Alice, a beautiful but distant woman, answers the door. The stranger seems oddly familiar with the house and its surroundings, and he embraces Alice, calling her "mother".

It turns out the stranger is Guy Thomas, who has returned home after 15 years. His grandfather, whom he despised, has left his entire fortune to Guy, leaving Alice with nothing. As the story unfolds, it's a tale of twists, turns, planning, scheming, double-crossing, and murder, exploring the complex relationships between mother and son, friend and lover, and business and pleasure.

Money, sex, and power are all up for grabs, but who is really in control of the game?
